CELEBRATING MY BIRTHDAY IN MILANO

One of the things that I missed the most during this hideous pandemic is traveling. I'm not just talking about a world tour cruise, but even those quick getaways were greatly missed, Milano among them for sure.

"Milano is ugly and foggy", I often hear that from non milanesi citizens, but honestly Milano usually greets me with bright sunny days most of the times.  This city means a lot to me, accustomed to leave in my Bologna microcosm, it's an open window on new opportunities, culture, art, food and much more. I got to know Milano better through a blog that I found by chance ages ago when I was looking for the best hamburger in the city. Browsing through Google results, I came across this post by "Conosco un posto", in the blog list of suggestions they highly recommend "Al Mercato". I was skeptical, but decided to give it a go. The burger was basically bigger than my face and packed with amazing quality ingredients, I left the place satisfied and impressed. From that experience I started following Caterina Zanzi and then her team. They totally won over my skepticism because they are trust worthy with their honest and genuine reviews, plus they write about a lot of interesting topics in addition to food and restaurants, from the best shopping places, to the most amazing trip locations, to where to find the best tennis courts. That's why I decided to support their amazing work by buying the Conosco un posto Milano guide, I even preordered it just have it signed by Caterina. I would swear by it if I lived in Milano, but I still reach out to it every time I need inspo about what to do, eat and see in Milano. Highly recommended.

Consigliatissima.

To restore my cherished relationship with quick getaways, I decided to celebrate my birthday with my husband in Milano and we definitively treated ourselves well. We started with a golden leaf cappuccino and a caramel macchiato enjoying a sumptuous view on the Duomo at The Dome (I found out about this lace through Conosco un posto article about the best rooftops). We spotted some delicious looking pancakes on other tables, but since we had quite the plan for lunch we decided to refrain our selves.

After this quick pick me up, we headed to le Terrazze del Duomo (the Duomo rooftop).  We never went there before,  maybe because of the huge waiting lines we thought it was too touristy, but there were just a few people standing at the entrance so we bought the tickets online (quite expensive if you buy them last minute, it's always better to book in advance) and went up to a mesmerizing view.

The highlight of the day has to be the lunch at Kappou Ninomiya. After the beloved Fukurou closed for good, chef Ninomiya open his new restaurant, that stands out for his quiet elegance. It has an open kitchen so you can enjoy the chef doing his magic with quick and harmonious movements. The gastronomic proposal is quite diversified, slightly more simple at lunch time, when you can also find teishoku (menu set), and more substantial at dinner time.

My husband went for a Shio Ramen (€ 15), while I decided to experience the Ninomiya Gozen (€ 42), a box that includes all the cheff's specialities (keep in mind that if you order this particular set you will have to wait approximately 15/20 minutes for it to be prepared, absolutely worth the wait). While my husband was happily slurping his ramen, I was focused on the glorious display of amazing food: sashimi, nigirizushi, grilled meat with Japanese mustard, zarusoba and tempura. Each teishoku is then completed with a serving of rice, a miso soup and tsukemono. I closed my eyes and for a moment I was in Tokyo. The Japanese clients chitchatting and every bite brought me back. Please don't think I'm crazy, but real sushi and sashimi fish is different, it has its own specific consistency, it's compact and at the same time it melts in your mouth, ah natsukashii... (nostalgia). We endend our delicious meal with a Matcha Tiramisu and a Ichigo Daifuku. I can't wait to go back and try more.

We had one more surprised outside the restaurant when I recognized Noemi, aka Cooking With The Hamster, reference point for asian cuisine in Milano (and much more), with her blog full of reviews and in depth analysis, a must read! Even though I'm quite shy, I decided to approach her and I was so happy to find out that she's absolutely nice and kind as she appears on IG, and it's not something I take for granted!

We visited the "Disney l'arte di raccontare storie senza tempo" at MUDEC (available till 23rd of february). It was a full immersion in the Disney creators and designers' world, we wandered around tables, story boards and sketches that were the inspirations behind characters and landscapes of famous animations. It was a trip down memory lane, from Snow White to Robin Hood to Frozen. If you are Disney lovers give it a go.

We concluded our day in Milano doing some crazy shopping at TENOHA, a Japanese concept store, with also a bar and a restaurant, located near Porta Genova. The shop offers a variety of snacks, stationery, ceramics, clothes, pretty much everything comes straight from Japan. I usually buy also from their e-commerce, but the physical shop has some gems that might not be stocked online, like the mini custard taiyaki for instance. Another super cool thing are the gashapons (or gachapons), our absolute favourite was the one with little buttons keyring, if you press the button you can hear the recorded voice that you hear on the bus when you call for your stop "tsugi tomarimas!"

To celebrate even more my birthday, I decided to "pop" a mini prosecco bottle on the train back home. A cheerfull ending for a glorious day in Milano.

2 DAYS IN LONDON (FALL EDITION)

Last year I surprised my husband for his birthday with a weekend away in London.
London is one of my absolute favourite cities in the world, in this previous post I took you with me for a 3 days getaway in the summer, this time it will be only 2 days and in autumn.
Hopefully this post will help or inspire you if you're planning your next trip.
I woke up before sunrise to catch the same super early flight, very tiring but it's the best way to spend as much time as possible in the british capital, since we don't have much of it.
I booked a room at the Citizen M in Shoreditch (I highly recommend you to check my previous London post to get more details about this accomodation) and they were so kind (shoutout to Kevin) to make us find a greeting card for my husband's birthday with the first hint for a treasure hunt in the hotel, we had so much fun!

DAY ONE

My husband is Michael Jackson's number one fan, so this exhibition seemed just the perfect gift, like icing on the cake!
"On The Wall" included several art works made by various artists inspired by the King of Pop and some memorabilia, like his famous white glove, one of his incredible leather jackets and even a pair of his iconic loafers.
It was a glorious time travel down to memory lane, the most emotional part was definitively the room with the videos of all the fans singing his hits.
We decided to get a magnet and then I also got a pair of star shaped earrings made by designer Jessica Russell Flint for the exhibition.

Prima tappa obbligatoria la mostra "On The Wall" alla National Portrait Gallery.

Since we didn't manage to have breakfast and lunch time was running over, we decided to have brunch at our favourite place, The Breackfast Club (Soho).
My perfect order would be an avocado toast with poched egg and the vanilla berries pancakes.
The food portions are huge and taste delicious, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
The only downside is the queue, since is such a popular place (all the different locations actually) you need to wait quite a lot for a table, try to be patient or show up before the opening time!

Since we were already in Soho we went to the Too Faced flagship store in Carnaby Street because I really wanted to find the Clover Eye Shadow Palette, that I don't think is even available in Italy, and this time I was lucky!
We had special plans for dinner so we went back to our hotel to rest and fresh up.

The birthday dinner had to be in a special location, that's why I booked a table (thanks to our lovely londoner friend) at Hutong at the Shard's 33rd floor.
While enjoying the incredible view we tasted some of Hutong signature dishes, such as:
- the Dim Sum Platter, with a selection of dim sums;
- the Spring Rolls, a fancy version of this chinese classic;
- the Roasted Pecking Duck, which is served in two ways: filleted directly at your table by one of the cheffs  to be combined with chives and spicy or sweet and sour sauces in a rice flower steamed roll, then the left is chopped seasoned with veggies and served as a side dish;
- last but not least my husband couldn't say no to the Red Lantern, fried soft shell crabs with sichuan pepper.
It was a dinner to remember.

- il Dim Sum Platter, con una selezione di ravioli al vapore;
- gli Spring Rolls, una versione davvero gustosa di questo classico della cucina cinese;
- la Roasted Pecking Duck, che viene servita in due modi: sfilettata e sporzionata al tavolo direttamente da uno degli chef (davvero interessante da guardare) e si gusta con erba cipollina  accompagnata con una scelta di salse piccanti ed agrodolci all'interno di una sfoglia di farina di riso rotonda cotta al vapore, poi le parti rimanenti vengono tagliate a cubetti mischiate con verdure e servite come contorno;

DAY TWO

On our last day in London we went back to Peggy Porschen in Belgravia for breakfast because for us it's absolutely mandatory.
During october usually the parlour gets decorated for halloween and also the menu has some special cakes and cupcakes for the occasion.
Every time the deliciousness of the sweets and all the details leave us speachless, I highly recommend it!

Since I'm a beauty blogger (in my spare time) I'm always searching for beauty related news and events, that's why I knew that By Terry launched a Palette Factory in Selfridges and I had to go and see what was all about.
It was like getting access to a mini lab, there were 62 different pigments to create almost 5.000 palettes combination and I had a blast!
I will dedicate an entire post to this amazing experience, so if you are into beauty related stuff stay tuned!

We then had lunch at Ippudo in Central Saint Giles, a mixed-use development in central London, designed by italian architect Renzo Piano, very recognizable for the buildings facades covered with vivid colours enamelled tiles.
We had our first Ippudo Ramen in Ginza (Tokyo) close to the Kabukiza and we fell in love.
London for us is also the capital of authentic ethnic food so every time we go, we try something new.
We had a Shiromaru ramen with extra chashu, which is the classic tonkotsu ramen, and an Akamaru ramen, which is a new take on the classic tonkotsu broth, infused with special miso paste and garlic oil.
We also had gyoza and karaage, everything was delicious.

To keep the Japan thread we tried Tombo for a traditional matcha and a monaka (icecream sandwitch with matcha icecream.)
We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and the flavorfull green tea so much we decided to buy their matcha powder and matcha latte blend, and we found out it's made in Uji (where matcha was invented), of course everything had to be in Hello kitty packaging.

We had some spare time left so we had a walk through Trafalgar Square and then to Chinatown and because of our sweet tooth we indulged ourselves with a bubblewrap at Bubblewrap London, a hot bubbly waffle with ice cream and as many toppings as you like, so yummy.
At that time they had a special collaboration with Hello Kitty, so I had to get the Hello Kitty shaped chocolate and a pin with her as a bubblewrap topping, kawaii things always get me.

We went back to Citizen M to get our trolleys, had a quick stroll through Shoreditch and then we took the Stansted Express from Liverpool Street.
I always (and I mean it) have a chicken avocado sandwich with a ginger shot and a chocolate pudding from Pret A Manger at Stansted and that's it, time to go back home.
