Warning: this blog post is not supposed to be a classic London guide, here you won't find touristic attractions, this post is all about my last mini getaway in one of my favourite places in the whole world.
I'm going to take you with me while I'm exploring new (for me at least) aspects of London.
Vi avviso subito: questo post non pretende di essere una guida di Londra, prescinde dalle attrazioni "classiche", ma vi illustra il mio ultimo mini viaggio in una delle città che preferisco al mondo.
Vi porto in giro con me, facendovi vedere alcuni aspetti di questa metropoli che ancora non avevo esplorato nei miei viaggi precedenti.
Let's start with accomodation, we chose the Citizen M hotel in Shoreditch for various reasons:
- it's only 10 minutes walk from London Liverpool Street station, where you can find the Stansted Express, so it's very convenient if you fly to Stansted and you don't have much time to spend;
- it's located in Shoreditch which is a really interesting and cool area, with amazing markets (Brick Lane and Spitafield), it has street art all over it and a bunch of nice place to eat and drink;
- London is not cheap, but this hi-tech hotel offers clean comfortable small rooms that seems to be cheaper than the average prices in the city.
Partiamo dall'alloggio, abbiamo scelto il Citizen M hotel a Shoreditch per alcuni motivi:
- è a circa 10 minuti a piedi dalla stazione London Liverpool Street, dove arriva e parte lo Stansted Express, quindi per chi ha pochi giorni disponibili è perfetto per ottimizzare i tempi;
- è situato nel quartiere di Shoreditch, una zona molto interessante, piena di mercati stupendi (Spitafield e Brick Lane tanto per citarvi i più famosi), è ricco di street art e di locali interessanti, nonchè di ottimi posti dove mangiare;
- il rapporto qualità/prezzo, Londra è cara e si sa, ma questo hotel super tecnologico è dotato di camere piccole, ma pulite e confortevoli, a prezzi inferiori alla media (confrontandolo con altri simili sul sito dove prenotiamo di solito).
DAY ONE
As soon as we got off the Stansted Express (remember to book in advance to save some money) we went straight to Crosstown Donuts corner in Spitafield market.
It's a funny three-wheeler that sells the most delicious donuts, my favourite is Banana Cream, a total dream.
Appena scesi dallo Stansted Express (da prenotare in anticipo per avere un po' di sconto) ci siamo fiondati a gustare i nostri donuts preferiti dal Crosstown Donuts corner nel mercato di Spitafield, il mio preferito in assoluto è Banana Cream, un
We left our hand luggages at the hotel and then we walked to Columbia Road to merge ourselves in the most beautiful flower market that takes places every sunday.
It's very crowded so it's better to go there early, we were late but we enjoyed all the colorful flowers and the live music as well.
Lasciati i bagagli in albergo siamo andati a piedi al mercato dei fiori che si tiene ogni domenica in Columbia Road, di solito è molto affollato quindi è meglio andarci sul presto, noi ci siamo immersi nel fiume di gente e abbiamo ascoltato musica dal vivo ammirando fiori stupendi.
We spent the rest of the morning wandering in Shoreditch, searching for its famous street art and we decided to try mexican food at DF/Mexico.
We had burritos, tacos and of course nachos with guacamole. The place is nice, the staff welcoming and the food really yummy.
La mattinata è proseguita tra le viuzze di Shoreditch per un tour di murales davvero particolari per finire con un pranzo gustoso da DF/Mexico, ambiente rilassato e piatti abbondanti, abbiamo provato dei tacos e dei burritos davvero buoni e ovviamente non potevano mancare i nachos col guacamole.
We got back to the hotel for a quick break from the unusual hot weather and then we jumped into the metro to get into Chinatown to browse some special bakeries that are very popular right now, I found out about it on instagram and decided to give it a go.

Dopo una breve pausa in albergo per rinfrescarci un po' (essendo luglio era veramente caldo) ci siamo diretti verso Chinatown per provare alcuni dei dolci locali che ormai spopolano anche su Instagram.
I posti da non perdere per alzare il vostro indice glicemico sono:
Happylemon, it's a tiny taint yellow shop with a long menu full of bubble tea, smoothies and other specialities depending on the season.
The packaging is simply adorable and kawaii.
We went for a mango iced tea which was a little too sweet for our taste, but the place was totally new for us and we didn't have time to scan the menu properly, so we would definitively go back to try new options.
We also got a mini cheesecake that was delicious, so fluffy and light, a real treat.
Happylemon, un minuscolo negozietto giallo con un vasto menu di bubble tea, smoothies e altri drink tutti a base di te che vengono serviti con un packaging davvero adorabile.
Noi abbiamo diviso un iced tea col mango, ma ci è sembrato troppo zuccherato, avremmo dovuto informarci meglio su come ordinare perchè le combinazioni e le possibilità sono davvero infinite.
Abbiamo provato anche una mini mono porzione di cheescake di quelle super vaporose e ci è piaciuta moltissimo.
Bubblewrap, the waffle dough is cooked in a special mold that create these fun bubbles, they serve it in a cone and you can choose from a variety of ice creams and toppings.
We went for a super simple vanilla and strawberries and we loved it!
The cold ice cream melts with the hot dough in the most delicious way, a must try for sure!
Be aware people usually queue for it so be patient.
Bubblewrap, l'impasto dei waffle viene cotto in una piastra particolare che crea delle bolle, una volta pronto viene servito con varie combinazioni gelati e topping, noi abbiamo optato per un super basico gelato alla vaniglia e fragole fresche, risultato? Superlativo, il gelato freddo contrasta con il bubble wrap waffle caldo e soffice, una vera goduria.
Fila per averlo assicurata quindi abbiate pazienza.
After wandering around Chinatown we went to Notting Hill and Portobello Road, one of the most gorgeous area of London, with all the colorful houses and the very famous market that takes place every saturday morning.
We had dinner at the Electric Diner, this american style restaurant has a lot of italians working there, so it was quite a funny surprise.
My husband went for the cheeseburger with fries and I decided to try a watermelon and feta salad, bot really tasty, but our favourite was the fried aubergine and ocra with some spicy sauce, my mouth is watering just by thinking about it!
The cocktails as well are really enjoyable.
Dopo una lunga passeggiata per i vicoli di Chinatown ci siamo diretti verso la zona di Notting Hill e Portobello Road, uno dei quartieri più suggestivi di Londra, caratterizzato da case colorate e da un mercato vintage dove fare un tuffo nel passato ogni sabato mattina.
Abbiamo cenato all'Electric Diner, un locale in stile americano dove troverete tantissimi italiani, quindi se avete nostalgia di casa ecco il posto giusto!
Mio marito ha scelto un cheeseburger di tutto rispetto ed io un'insalata fresca con anguria e feta, ma il piatto forte è stata la frittura di melanzane e ocra con una salsina squisita di accompagnamento, anche i cocktails sono molto piacevoli.
The diner is connected to the Electric Cinema, which resembles more a theatre with all those dark red velvet seats.
This place is really something, if you book in advance you can also choose to enjoy your movie in a front row bad or in a comfy couch in the back, really limited places.
Being extra as I am I booked the couch and it was so cozy I almost fell asleep!
You can also enjoy drinks and yummy substantial snacks from the bar.
A dreamy experience, would totally do it again!
Al diner è collegato uno dei cinema più particolari di Londra, l'omonimo Electric Cinema che sembra più un teatro con quelle lussuose poltrone di velluto rosso.
Prenotando per tempo e spendendo un po' di più si può vedere il fil m da un mega divano in ultima fila oppure addirittura sdraiati su un letto in prima fila, posti davvero limitati.

Day 2 started at Peggy Porschen Parlour in the super fancy Belgravia.
Actually my mother in law made me discover this place many years ago and since then we have to go there every time we are in London, that's how much I love Peggy Porschen's patisserie.
This little pink cafe has always incredible decorations depending on the season or the occasion, for summer they went for a feast of pastel blooming flowers.
It became very popular real quick, so you would easily find people queueing, but it's worth it!
We tried two cupcakes from the summer collection, one with honey and the other with raspberry and chocolate and then a slice of vanilla and champagne cake, beautiful and delicious at the same time.
Il secondo giorno è iniziato con una colazione stellare da Peggy Porschen, un delizioso café situato nel cuore dell'elegantissima Belgravia.
E' stata mia suocera a farmi conoscere la dea della pasticceria londinese ormai più di 10 anni fa e da allora ogni volta che torno a Londra vado a provare le sue specialità e sono sempre più buone!
Questo piccolo negozietto rosa decorato a seconda della stagione è letteralmente preso d'assalto quindi troverete probabilmente fila per entrare, portate pazienza perchè ne vale la pena!
Abbiamo provato due cupcakes della collezione stiva, uno al miele ed uno cioccolato e lamponi, poi una fetta di torta vaniglia e champagne.
Inutile dire che le decorazioni di questi dolci sono incredibili, ma il gusto è il vero protagonista.
We then went for a walk into Chelsea, with a quick pit stop at Harrods ad then we met a dear friend for lunch at Burger and Lobster at Harvey Nichols at Knightsbridge.
This place is amazing for a satisfying lunch that doesn't leave you broke, the star on the menu (if you listen to my hubby) is the lobster roll (£ 25), but I always go for the burger that comes with fries and salad, can't go wrong with the burger either.
Dopo una passeggiata per le vie più chic di Chelsea ed un giretto da Harrods ci siamo incontrati con un nostro caro amico per pranzare da Burger and Lobster all'ultimo piano di Harvey Nichols in Nightsbridge.
Questo locale è fantastico per un pranzo ricco ma non eccessivamente caro, si può gustare un delizioso panino all'aragosta per 25 sterline e a sentire mio marito "panino" è un termine riduttivo.
Io prendo sempre il burger di dimensioni faraoniche e davvero buonissimo.
After a few hours of wandering through Soho and Chinatown we headed back to the hotel to rest a little before our evening out.
We finally went to The Shard, I say finally because I always postponed for some reason, but this time I booked (if you book in advance you can save some coins) the Champagne Experience, a fancy name that basically means that a glass of champagne is included in your ticket.
The view is stunning, if you go to the level 72 you can also enjoy an open deck and some crisp air.
To access the restaurants area you need to reach another entrance which is just around the corner.
We had a few drinks at the Aqua while admiring an incredible sunset.
Dopo un paio d'ore spese a girare tra Soho e Chinatown con il nostro amico, abbiamo deciso di riposarci un po' in albergo in vista dei piani serali.
Finalmente siamo saliti sullo Shard, dico finalmente perchè ho rimandato davvero tante volte e finalmente mi sono decisa a prenotare la Champagne Experience, un nome altisonante che si traduce in un calice di champagne compreso nel biglietto (se prenotate in anticipo risparmiate).
La vista è davvero mozzafiato, se salite al settantaduesimo piano alcune parti sono aperte ed entra un'aria pungente.
Per accedere alla zona bar e ristorante è necessario passare dall'entrata corretta girando intorno al grattacielo.
Abbiamo fatto aperitivo all'Aqua con una vista impagabile ed un tramonto spettacolare, persino in bagno godrete di un panorama pazzesco.
Next skyscraper the Walkie Talkie, this building's shape got it this funny nickname, where the Sky Garden is located at the 35th floor.
You need to book in advance your visit (that's totally free) or you can also book in one of the bar/restaurant in the building.
We had some interesting cocktails while enjoying the city lights.
Seconda meta della serata secondo grattacielo, questa volta si tratta dello Sky Garden, un giardino situato al trentacinquesimo piano del Walkie Talkie, edificio così soprannominato per la sua forma.
Per visitare questo giardino con vista mozzafiato bisogna prenotare, la visita è gratuita, è possibile anche prenotare nei bar/ristoranti presenti nella struttura per un aperitivo.
Abbiamo assaggiato cocktails interessanti mentre le luci della città cominciavano ad accendersi, davvero una bella esperienza.
Then we walked to St. Paul Cathedral and to the Millennium Bridge to enjoy even more this gorgeous city.
Time to catch a bus and go back to the hotel.
Una passeggiata fino a St. Paul e qualche minuto di sosta sul Millennium Bridge per godere ancora della città e poi in albergo.
Last day's breakfast was at Breakfast Club in Soho, honestly it couldn't be elsewhere.
I found out about this place a few years ago via instagram and it quickly became one of my absolute favourite breakfast place.
We always share an avocado on toast with poached egg and pancakes with vanilla cream and berries both outstanding.
This place is very chilled and relaxed, they serve huge amount of delicious food and that's why there's always a crowd waiting for a table, just be patient it's totally worthed.
La colazione del terzo ed ultimo giorno non poteva che essere da The Breakfast Club a Soho.
Ho scoperto questo locale per caso su internet e anche questo è diventato una tappa fissa.
Io e mio marito dividiamo sempre un avocado toast con uova in camicia e pancakes con crema e frutti di bosco.
Ambiente rilassato, porzioni giganti, cibo delizioso, unica pecca la fila! E' sempre preso d'assalto quasi a qualsiasi ora, segno comunque che oltre al fumo c'è sicuramente anche l'arrosto.
We slowly headed back to Shoreditch to see some more street art.
We also visited Boxpark, that are basically containers repurposed into edgy shops and restaurants, a must see in Shoreditch.
We had lunch at Dirty Burgers, I rarely leave my confort zone, so I went for the cheese bacon burger, my hubby instead who likes to experiment ordered the Dirty Bird, with buttermilk fried chicken and chipotle mayo, he said it was the best burger of his entire life!
Shoreditch easily became one of my absolute favourite areas in London, I can't wait to go back!
Siamo tornati verso Shoreditch alla ricerca di altri murales, abbiamo fatto un giro per i negozi di BoxPark, una serie di containers rimodernati e utilizzati appunto come boutiques o come mini ristorantini, davvero molto particolari.
Abbiamo mangiato da Dirty Burgers, io non esco raramente dalla mia confort zone quindi ho ordinato un classico cheese bacon burger, mentre mio marito, che ama sperimentare, ha scelto il Dirty Bird con pollo fritto nel latticello e maionese chipotle, a suo dire il miglior panino della sua vita!
Shoreditch si conferma pertanto una delle mie zone preferite di Londra, non vedo l'ora di poterci tornare!
It was time to get our luggages and head to the Stansted Airport.
Usually in afternoon the Stansted Express train is pretty crowded, so in order to avoid traveling standing for 40 minutes (as we always do), memorize the timetable and get there early.
Security checks are endless so to save yourself some time put all your liquids,cream or paste products in transparent plastic bags.
We always have sandwitches at Pret a Manger, it's my tradition since I went studying in Wolverhampton when I was at Uni and it never disappoints.
The chicken avocado is my go to, I've tried a lot of sandwitches but this one it's hard to beat!
Ormai purtroppo era giunto il momento di prendere i nostri bagagli e dirigerci all'aeroporto di Stansted.
Lo Stansted Express dalle 5 in poi è veramente pienissimo quindi per evitare di fare il viaggio in piedi (come facciamo sempre noi) è meglio memorizzare gli orari e arrivare a Liverpool Street con un po' di anticipo.
Inoltre le file dei controlli sono piuttosto lunghe, ricordatevi di portare con voi bustine di plastica trasparenti dove inserire tutti i prodotti liquidi, in gel o in crema per velocizzare l'ingresso.

Bake, is the most famous traditional bakery in Chinatown, you can find a lot of amazing sweets, but I had only a thing in my mind, Taiyaki!
It's a very popular dessert in Japan, it's like a fish shaped pancake with custard or azuki beans inside and it's delicious.
Here we found a special version of it, it was made like an ice cream cone and we really enjoyed it!
Bake, la pasticceria cinese con la P maiuscola, serve tutta una serie di dolci squisiti, ma noi ci siamo fiondati sui Taiyaki, una specie di pancake ripieno a forma di pesce, si trova ovunque in Giappone, qui lo abbiamo provato nella versione cono con gelato alla vaniglia, davvero ottimo.

Abbiamo provato due cupcakes della collezione stiva, uno al miele ed uno cioccolato e lamponi, poi una fetta di torta vaniglia e champagne.
Inutile dire che le decorazioni di questi dolci sono incredibili, ma il gusto è il vero protagonista.

This place is amazing for a satisfying lunch that doesn't leave you broke, the star on the menu (if you listen to my hubby) is the lobster roll (£ 25), but I always go for the burger that comes with fries and salad, can't go wrong with the burger either.

Questo locale è fantastico per un pranzo ricco ma non eccessivamente caro, si può gustare un delizioso panino all'aragosta per 25 sterline e a sentire mio marito "panino" è un termine riduttivo.

After a few hours of wandering through Soho and Chinatown we headed back to the hotel to rest a little before our evening out.
We finally went to The Shard, I say finally because I always postponed for some reason, but this time I booked (if you book in advance you can save some coins) the Champagne Experience, a fancy name that basically means that a glass of champagne is included in your ticket.
The view is stunning, if you go to the level 72 you can also enjoy an open deck and some crisp air.
To access the restaurants area you need to reach another entrance which is just around the corner.

Finalmente siamo saliti sullo Shard, dico finalmente perchè ho rimandato davvero tante volte e finalmente mi sono decisa a prenotare la Champagne Experience, un nome altisonante che si traduce in un calice di champagne compreso nel biglietto (se prenotate in anticipo risparmiate).
La vista è davvero mozzafiato, se salite al settantaduesimo piano alcune parti sono aperte ed entra un'aria pungente.
Per accedere alla zona bar e ristorante è necessario passare dall'entrata corretta girando intorno al grattacielo.
Abbiamo fatto aperitivo all'Aqua con una vista impagabile ed un tramonto spettacolare, persino in bagno godrete di un panorama pazzesco.

Seconda meta della serata secondo grattacielo, questa volta si tratta dello Sky Garden, un giardino situato al trentacinquesimo piano del Walkie Talkie, edificio così soprannominato per la sua forma.
Per visitare questo giardino con vista mozzafiato bisogna prenotare, la visita è gratuita, è possibile anche prenotare nei bar/ristoranti presenti nella struttura per un aperitivo.

Last day's breakfast was at Breakfast Club in Soho, honestly it couldn't be elsewhere.
I found out about this place a few years ago via instagram and it quickly became one of my absolute favourite breakfast place.
We always share an avocado on toast with poached egg and pancakes with vanilla cream and berries both outstanding.
This place is very chilled and relaxed, they serve huge amount of delicious food and that's why there's always a crowd waiting for a table, just be patient it's totally worthed.

Ho scoperto questo locale per caso su internet e anche questo è diventato una tappa fissa.
Io e mio marito dividiamo sempre un avocado toast con uova in camicia e pancakes con crema e frutti di bosco.
Ambiente rilassato, porzioni giganti, cibo delizioso, unica pecca la fila! E' sempre preso d'assalto quasi a qualsiasi ora, segno comunque che oltre al fumo c'è sicuramente anche l'arrosto.

Then we met with our dear american friend, Shakespear fanatic, to drink cider and Pimm's in a proper british pub, The Three Tuns Pub, and time just flew by.

We also visited Boxpark, that are basically containers repurposed into edgy shops and restaurants, a must see in Shoreditch.
We had lunch at Dirty Burgers, I rarely leave my confort zone, so I went for the cheese bacon burger, my hubby instead who likes to experiment ordered the Dirty Bird, with buttermilk fried chicken and chipotle mayo, he said it was the best burger of his entire life!
Shoreditch easily became one of my absolute favourite areas in London, I can't wait to go back!
Siamo tornati verso Shoreditch alla ricerca di altri murales, abbiamo fatto un giro per i negozi di BoxPark, una serie di containers rimodernati e utilizzati appunto come boutiques o come mini ristorantini, davvero molto particolari.
Abbiamo mangiato da Dirty Burgers, io non esco raramente dalla mia confort zone quindi ho ordinato un classico cheese bacon burger, mentre mio marito, che ama sperimentare, ha scelto il Dirty Bird con pollo fritto nel latticello e maionese chipotle, a suo dire il miglior panino della sua vita!
Shoreditch si conferma pertanto una delle mie zone preferite di Londra, non vedo l'ora di poterci tornare!
It was time to get our luggages and head to the Stansted Airport.
Usually in afternoon the Stansted Express train is pretty crowded, so in order to avoid traveling standing for 40 minutes (as we always do), memorize the timetable and get there early.
Security checks are endless so to save yourself some time put all your liquids,cream or paste products in transparent plastic bags.
We always have sandwitches at Pret a Manger, it's my tradition since I went studying in Wolverhampton when I was at Uni and it never disappoints.
The chicken avocado is my go to, I've tried a lot of sandwitches but this one it's hard to beat!
Ormai purtroppo era giunto il momento di prendere i nostri bagagli e dirigerci all'aeroporto di Stansted.
Lo Stansted Express dalle 5 in poi è veramente pienissimo quindi per evitare di fare il viaggio in piedi (come facciamo sempre noi) è meglio memorizzare gli orari e arrivare a Liverpool Street con un po' di anticipo.
Inoltre le file dei controlli sono piuttosto lunghe, ricordatevi di portare con voi bustine di plastica trasparenti dove inserire tutti i prodotti liquidi, in gel o in crema per velocizzare l'ingresso.
Mangiamo sempre dei sandwitches al Pret a Manger, è una mia tradizione da quando ho fatto l'Erasmus a Wolverhampton.
